Tyrone Spencer

A Chicago native with deep roots on the city's South Side, Tyrone Spencer developed a love for jazz at an early age while listening to classic recordings by legends such as Gene Ammons, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Wes Montgomery, and Louis Armstrong. Those formative experiences ignited a lifelong passion for music and laid the foundation for his journey as a jazz musician.

Although he began playing trumpet in high school, Tyrone eventually discovered his true musical voice through the saxophone. Drawn to its rich, expressive sound, he dedicated himself to mastering the instrument through private study, college ensembles, and years of performance experience. Under the guidance of acclaimed Chicago saxophonist and educator Ari Brown, Tyrone continued to refine his craft and develop a distinctive style rooted in the traditions of jazz.

After overcoming personal challenges and inspired by the encouragement of mentors, friends, and family, Tyrone founded Second Nature Jazz Quintet (SNJQ) in 2015. As band leader, he brings together talented musicians who share a passion for excellence, professionalism, and creating memorable musical experiences.

Today, Tyrone's soulful tenor saxophone sound and commitment to preserving the spirit of "Jazz on the Southside" continue to define the heart of SNJQ. Through every performance, he honors the rich legacy of Chicago jazz while sharing its timeless appeal with audiences of all generations.
